Understanding Voltage Sag, Soft Resets, and Hard Resets: A Guide to Battery Management for Your Liberty Trike

Understanding voltage sag, soft resets and hard resets
Have you ever been out on a long ride with your Liberty Trike and wondered how to manage your battery more effectively? If so, you're in the right place. In this post, we're going to explain three essential concepts: voltage sag, soft resets, and hard resets. Understanding these will help ensure your Liberty Trike's battery is functioning at its best and prolong its overall lifespan. Let's dive in with this video first...

What is Voltage Sag?

Voltage sag refers to the temporary drop in the voltage that a battery experiences when put under significant load. This is a universal occurrence with all batteries, including the one in your Liberty Trike. You may witness this when you use the throttle, especially during high-pressure situations like climbing a steep hill.

The battery's voltage level may drop, causing the battery indicator to display fewer bars. However, this is a momentary change. Once the load reduces, the voltage bounces back. Observing the behavior of your battery under these conditions can give you a true measure of its remaining charge.

Soft Resets and Hard Resets: What Are They?

Your Liberty Trike is equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS), which serves to protect the battery from over-discharging and prolong its life. When your battery gets close to being depleted, the BMS steps in and cuts off the power.

Turning the power off and then back on to squeeze out a bit more ride time is what we call a soft reset. It's like your trike is running on fumes at this stage, and while you can do this a few times to extend your ride a bit, bear in mind that your battery is nearly empty.

A hard reset, on the other hand, is a little more involved. This process includes unplugging the battery completely, plugging it back in, and turning it on. Hard resets should only be performed a couple of times and only when absolutely necessary. Repeatedly performing hard resets can cause the BMS to enter a protective state, which prevents further use and even charging of the battery. In such cases, you may have to get in touch with our service team to sort out the issue.

The Bottom Line

The Liberty Trike offers a balance of pleasure and performance, all while keeping safety as the top priority. Understanding your trike, especially its battery's behavior under different conditions, will not only enhance your riding experience but also help prolong the life of your battery.

Remember, it's crucial to know your limitations and adjust your expectations accordingly. Charge your battery properly before heading out for long rides and avoid pushing it to the limits. This way, you can keep your Liberty Trike running smoothly for years to come.

We hope this guide helped shed some light on battery management for your Liberty Trike. For more tips and tricks, stay tuned to our blog. Happy riding!
